The Wett Inspection was a Deal Breaker in the Purchase of our Home

WETT certified inspector examining brick fireplace during home inspection in Guelph Ontario

The Wett Inspection was a Deal Breaker in the Purchase of our Home

We just bought our first home, and it has a beautiful fireplace. The room with the fireplace is so inviting and cozy, we knew that it would be a room that we would spend a lot of our time in. Therefore, it was important that we have a WETT Inspection report outlining its condition before we put in our offer to purchase.

Since the sellers of the home did not have such a report, we contacted The Chimney Swift who had been recommended by friends.

The WETT (Wood Energy Technology Transfer) certified technician from The Chimney Swift who came to do the WETT Inspection was very knowledgeable and courteous. He explained the steps involved in doing the inspection (although this was clearly explained to me when I made the appointment) and then he went about doing it.  At one point in his work, I noticed that he had with him a video camera that he moved up the flue. He was doing this to inspect the condition of the terra cotta tiles that line the interior of the fireplace’s masonry chimney.

After the inspection, he took his time answering all my questions (since I’m new at woodburning, I had many questions). He then explained that I’d be getting my detailed WETT Inspection report by email.

Sure enough, when I received the report, it was easy to read, and the report pointed out exactly what we had (pictures included). It outlined all the areas of the fireplace and the chimney and indicated their condition and compliance to code. Fortunately for us, the fireplace had been built to code and had been well maintained. No work was required to start using it.

Needless to say, we immediately put in our offer to purchase, and it was accepted.

Our insurance company did not require the WETT Inspection (although we have friends who did require this to receive their home insurance).

Because the fireplace makes the living room such a focal point of our home, this is where we gravitate to with family and friends. Even when there is no fire in the hearth, it is such a cozy room to sit and read or play games or just visit. On those cold winter days, with a fire on, there is no more relaxing place to be.

Thank you, Chimney Swift for giving us peace of mind.
