Chimney restoration going back a few years

Chimney in need of repair
Chimney in need of repair

I was looking through some old photos and I found the attached newspaper story. It refers to a chimney restoration we did at a home in Guelph in the early 1980’s. The design was not ours – we restored as the chimneys were originally built. Our “golden arches”. Unfortunately the homeowners decided to paint the brick after the restoration. This led to premature deterioration due to moisture entrapment under the paint. A chimney is exposed to many extremes in weather – especially in winter. If moisture is trapped within the brick, it will be subject to freeze/thaw cycling and the brick will crumble. Brick on a chimney should not be painted.
