“I need a WETT certificate for my woodstove and wood burning fireplace”

This is a request we get all the time.  Usually because a homeowner is selling their home and the prospective buyer has included the request in their “offer to purchase.”

Or sometimes, the request comes from the prospective buyer who wants to ensure that the wood burning system, in the home they wish to purchase, is in good working condition and is compliant with existing codes.

And often, the request comes from the homeowner who has just moved into their newly purchased home and their insurance company is requesting the inspection of the wood burning system.  Insurance companies will often refer to this as a WETT Inspection.

The Chimney Swift then explains that what the prospective purchaser or insurance company means is that they require an inspection by a WETT certified technician. There is no such thing as a WETT certificate for an appliance. It is the technician who has acquired WETT certification and with his knowledge will inspect your wood burning system to determine condition and compliance to current codes.

Why should I bother getting an inspection by a WETT certified technician?

  1. To have the full assurance that your wood-burning appliance is installed in accordance with building and fire code requirements. Safety is paramount, and wood-burning appliances are manufactured to work safely and efficiently when they are installed, used and maintained properly.
  2. To satisfy the requirements of the insurance company.
  3. Having a WETT inspection done before listing a home alerts the homeowner of any potential repairs that may require attention.
  4. Making any repairs ahead of listing a home avoids having these issues become stumbling blocks when a purchaser submits an offer.
  5. A favourable WETT inspection report reflects well on the condition of a home and will therefore command a higher price than one that is in need of repair.
